British elections on Thursday – What polls show

by

London, Thanasis Gavos

Voters are watching the ballot box on Thursday in Britain to run in the local elections and nominate approximately 4,350 councilors.

In England elections are about 146 municipalitiesincluding all the boroughs of London, while in Scotland the positions of consultants of all of them are at stake 32 δήμων and to Wales of all 22 δήμων.

Political analysts estimate that in addition to the individual issues that concern each region, in the decision of the voters they will count, as usual, issues of national interest, such as the increased cost of living or the partygate for which the government is blamed. Is first electoral process at national level after from the early parliamentary elections of December 2019.

All registered residents of municipalities aged 18 and over in England and 16 and older in Scotland and Wales are eligible to vote. EU and Commonwealth citizens living in the United Kingdom also vote in England, while in Scotland and Wales all foreign legal residents vote.

The polls open at 7 in the morning local and close at 10 at night. The results are expected to be announced by municipalities from the early morning hours.

According estimates of polling companies, a loss of more than 350 city council seats would mean a major defeat for the ruling Conservative Party. Losses of up to 150 advisers could be justified as a normal friction by the two-and-a-half-year rule, while a double-digit number of losses would be considered a success for Boris Johnson’s party.

On the other hand, Sir Kir Starmar’s Labor could speak of a great victory if they win more than 200 municipal seats from the Tories. On the contrary, gaining a few dozen consulting positions would be considered a rather disappointing result.

According to last big pollthe Conservatives could lose even more than 550 city councilors, with London boroughs under their control for years passing to Labor.

Conservative Party candidates often face questions from voters about the partygate that is believed to have hurt the party’s popularity. At the same time, in recent days, the case of ordering food and beer from Mr. Starmer and his associates during their meeting in Durham in April 2021, has grown, amid bans on rallies. The Labor leader has claimed that it was a break from a long working meeting, accusing the Conservatives of “mud”.

However, the Tories argue that the circumstances under which Prime Minister Johnson was fined for meeting in the cabinet’s room do not differ from those described by Sir Kir in his own case.

Many political commentators estimate that a bad result for the two major parties in the municipal elections could lead to a questioning of their leaders. In order to provoke the process of ousting Prime Minister Boris Johnson, however, 54 letters of distrust must be submitted by a total of 359 deputies to the relevant party body.
