The institutional framework for the protection of the consumer against unfair commercial practices is being strengthened.
The new law of the Ministry of Development, which will be passed on Wednesday, will be another tool for restraining prices and shielding consumers, as it provides a “brake” on abusive general terms of trade, an obligation to list prices, and strengthen the rights of customers.
What the new provisions provide
The new provisions are an adaptation of Greek legislation to European law and provide for:
- In the case of discounts, the initial price should not be an arbitrary price in the past, but the lowest price of the last 30 days.
- The same product may not have different specifications from country to country.
- The right of 14 or 30 days, depending on the case, to withdraw a consumer from a contract with a water and energy provider is guaranteed.
- The evaluation of products on the internet by alleged consumers will be strictly controlled.
- Where there is ranking on the internet for various products it should be explicitly stated where the advertisement that shapes the ranking is hidden.
- Penalties for violating consumer protection provisions increase to 4 per cent of turnover.
- Penalties for relevant violations over € 50,000 will be posted publicly.
