Bees and other pollinators such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds are increasingly threatened by human activities.
To educate the public about the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN has established May 20 as World Bee Day.
More than 2,000 species of bees live on the European continent and are responsible, together with other pollinators, for the reproduction of 78% of the endemic flora, 84% of the cultivable species, and 76% of the food production.
For these reasons, but also to better support the European beekeeping sector, the European Parliament has taken drastic initiatives to protect bees, demanding a ban on the use of certain insecticides and the immediate modernization of legislation. After all, 9% of European bee species are already in danger of extinction, a development that threatens not only themselves but also the approximately 600,000 professional and amateur beekeepers in the EU.
In its proposals the EP also includes the increase of funds for national beekeeping programs but also the better protection of local and regional bee species.
