Why Erdogan prepares summer with “calm yoke” – “Decisive composure” from Athens

by

A taste for a hot summer is “Mitsotakis yoke” of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Athens reacted calmly, through the government representative Giannis Oikonomou determined to keep the tones low, but ready for the challenges on the part of Turkey that are almost certain to follow, as the “Mitsotakis yoke” Erdogan is said to be giving the “green light” for more intense reactions from his government officials.

But why is Turkey once again choosing the path of tension, when only in March Erdogan welcomed Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Istanbul?

Experienced data experts note that the factor that changed the game decisively was his speech Prime Minister in the US Congress, but also the special contacts that Mr. Mitsotakis had in the USA. There Turkey understood that now The Greek Cypriot lobby in Washington is strong and is constantly gaining ground and the reaction of the members of the congress to the -without naming- reports of Mr. Mitsotakis in Turkey did not escape the attention of the Turkish government at all. At the same time, in fact, the Turkish president is still “eating door” from the White House and according to current estimates this is not going to change earlier than November.

However, Erdogan’s internal fronts and especially the economy –with official inflation reaching 70%– are an additional reason that leads the Turkish president to the “need” to distract with the resurgence of the front with Greece.

All this creates conditions for a hot summer in the Aegean on two levels: One has to do with the Turkish provocation in terms of violations – a taste for which they already gave days ago with the overflight at 2.5 nm. from Alexandroupolis) and the second with the re-instrumentation of immigration. Already, the flows from Evros have increased, while just yesterday boats tried to transport to the Greek islands more than 600 illegal immigrants.

In this scenario, Athens chooses the path of “decisive composure”. In this context, the statement of the Minister of Citizen Protection Takis Theodorikakou (on ANT1) about the immigration pressures in Evros is typical:

«As far as Evros is concerned, there is pressure all these months. Let everyone inside and outside the borders know that the Greek Police and the Armed Forces are there protecting the integrity of the country. We will not allow anyone to enter Greece illegally. Neither in Evros nor in our islands and let everyone realize this… The country, the prime minister and the government as a whole, with respect to international law, are defending our national interests in a very stable way».

Last night, however, the government’s reaction to “Mitsotakis yoke” by Erdogan, with government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou to point out that Greece makes a policy of principles. He stated in particular: “The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis strongly and effectively defends both our national law and international legitimacy. Greek foreign policy is strongly based on history, international law and our alliances, no matter how much it bothers some. We will not confront statements with the Turkish leadership. “Our policy is a policy of principles.”
