The following is the entire dialogue between the Prime Minister and Mr Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives, Gregory Meeks, at the beginning of the meeting:
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: It is a pleasure to see you again so soon after our meeting in Washington.
I would like to thank you once again for the kindness and hospitality you extended to me when you welcomed me to the Congress. It was a very important moment for me but also an important moment, I believe, for the country. And I believe that your visit is a great opportunity to fully understand what is happening here, but also to see the progress the country has made, to reaffirm its strategic importance and the very strong and long-standing cooperation between our two countries. Welcome.
Gregory Meeks: Thank you. It is my great pleasure to be here with you. And I would like to express my great satisfaction at your visit to the United States, at a critical juncture, and the speech you made before the US Congress. I have been in Congress for 24 years. The message you sent that day, in the times we live in and given the relationship between the USA and Greece regarding the question of democracy, which unfortunately – in 2022 – faces risks, was extremely important.
So thank you for the welcome and for your message to members of Congress.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: I would also like to acknowledge the great work your Ambassador is already doing in Greece. One gets the feeling that it has been here for years and that it has adapted very well, which does not surprise us at all.
Gregory Meeks: From a “technical” point of view it has indeed been here for years.
