The city of Preveza was visited by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after the handover to traffic of a section of the Amfilochia bypass.

The Prime Minister, accompanied by MPs and local bodies, walked through the city center and the beach, where he had the opportunity to meet and talk with residents. In a cafe in the city, many people and members of New Democracy were waiting for the prime minister.

During his short greeting, Mr. Mitsotakis, among other things, referred to the completion of the Amfilochia bypass project, he made reference to the submarine link of Lefkada, a vital project that is being launched, while he reiterated that the elections will be held at the end of the four years.

He then visited the archaeological site of Nikopolis, a few kilometers outside the city of Preveza, where Mitsotakis was welcomed, at the site where the great ancient theater is located, by the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni.

The prime minister appeared particularly enthusiastic, both from the archaeological site and from the progress of the restoration works. During his conversation both with Mrs. Mendoni and with the regional governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kahrimanis, as well as the head of the Ephorate of Antiquities, Giorgos Riginos, he showed interest in the prospects of the entire archaeological site, as a driver of development and tourism perspective of the wider region.

In her statements, immediately after the departure of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Mendoni emphasized that every time Kyriakos Mitsotakis visits Epirus, he asks about ancient Nikopolis, as it is an area that interests him very much and she continued: “This, precisely because he knows very well that such archaeological sites, with these monuments in areas of special natural interest, in addition to poles of culture are also poles of development”.

Responding to a related question, the Minister of Culture said that at the archaeological site of Nikopolis, at least for the last 3 years, a large project is being carried out, to which new data is constantly being added. For the restoration of the great theater of Nikopolis, he pointed out that the project continues within the framework of the Regional Operational Program, with the Ephorate of Antiquities being systematically involved and the project being within schedules. “Therefore, the end of 2023 will have delivered the part that is planned to be delivered” the minister underlined and added:

“At the same time, the Ministry of Culture has included in the Recovery Fund three more monuments of Nikopolis, two basilicas and the Palace of Georgios Ekdikos. The projects have started and at the same time the dossier of the candidacy of ancient Nikopolis for UNESCO is being organized”.

As Mrs. Mendoni pointed out, it is not something easy, it requires a lot of work and she pointed out that the “green light” was given by the removal of the road, in order to unify the archaeological site, which was a condition of UNESCO. He noted that after this, the Ministry of Culture is proceeding with the revision of the strategic plan that exists for the area, in order to combine the new data created after the removal of the road.

The goal and planning of the Ministry of Culture, as underlined by Lina Mendoni, is to utilize land for the cultivation of aromatic plants in areas similar to ancient Nikopolis, in areas that have been reclaimed, as is done in other areas where there are olive groves. “We have planned this, it is one of the priorities of the Cultural Resources Management Organization, we have discussed it locally, it needs a lot of work, it is part of our immediate planning,” he noted.
