Politico notes that Cavusoglu was already furious with Burbok’s comments during her visit to Athens
Politico interprets the intense “exchange” of opinions between Berbock and Cavusoglu in the joint press conference during the visit of the German Foreign Ministry to Istanbul.
As noted in the article, the Turkish foreign minister was already enraged by comments made earlier that day by Burbok during her visit to Athens pointing out the German foreign minister’s statement that “the Greek islands of Lesvos, Chios, Rhodes and many others they are Greek lands and no one has the right to question them.”
The report also mentions Cavusoglu’s statement that he “missed” Angela Merkel.
“When Merkel was there, Germany’s position was balanced, she could mediate,” Cavusoglu said to conclude that “third countries, including Germany, should not be a tool of provocation and propaganda especially by Greece and the Greek Cypriot side ” he said.
The report also mentions what Nikos Dendias said about the German reparations, the arrangement of which he described as “mainly a matter of principle”, which would help Greek-German relations and ended with the answer given by the German Foreign Ministry.
“I understand that, unlike Germany, the Greek government does not consider this legal issue closed. I think we have a good base on which to build further,” adding that there could be discussions about investment in towns and villages affected by German wartime occupation.
