“The issue of Evros has started since June. The European Left, the parties to which SYRIZA and PASOK belong, since June has proactively denounced Greece to the competent committee of the European Parliament”
The entrapment of the 38 migrants on an islet in Evros was disputed by Mr Notis Mitarakis speaking to SKAI.
“I went to the Greek shores 10 meters from the islet. At the closest point the distance is 10 meters, half of which is visible to have a depth of 10 cm. How could anyone be stranded on this island?’ asked the Minister of Immigration and Asylum.
“There is a great increase in pressure from Turkey on both the land and sea borders,” the minister emphasized, however he clarified that “last year we had the lowest flows of the decade throughout Greece, while this year the second lowest flows.”
“Our country continues to apply a strict, but fair immigration policy based absolutely on international law,” he assured.
Regarding the case of the 38 migrants in Evros, he replied that the Greek authorities acted in an exemplary manner.
“The issue of Evros has started since June. THE European Left, the parties to which SYRIZA and PASOK belong, since June has proactively reported Greece to the competent committee of the European Parliament. I had again denounced Turkey’s attempt to exploit the islets,” the minister clarified.
“Because the fence exists, every day the Turks organize and deliberately leave them in the middle of the river so that Greece can come outside the fence to take them and bring them into the country,” said Mr. Mitarakis.
As he reported, the 38 migrants alleged that they were arrested in Turkish cities, bused by Turkish authorities to a structure, then put on the bank of the Evros River on the Turkish side and moved three times to different entry points under the threat of violence, until to find the gap to be able to on Greek soil.
For the five year old who allegedly lost his life stated that “they (the migrants) themselves say that a child died and was buried on Turkish soil. If it is true that a child was lost, which I cannot confirm, but I consider the statements to be correct, I have already contacted the Red Cross to make arrangements with the Turkish authorities to come to Greece and be buried with our values that humanity imposes” he pointed out.
“I have already requested, on August 30, a special meeting in the Parliament, in the special permanent public administration committee, to inform colleagues about all the developments in immigration” Notis Mitarakis emphasized.
