The president of the Parliament emphasized that the meetings in question are of a strictly confidential nature
The president of the Parliament expressed his strong dissatisfaction with the leaks that took place from the meeting of the Institutions and Transparency Committee in a statement. Konstantinos Tasoulas.
Mr. Tasoulas described the Commission as a “strainer” and the leaks from the meeting as “unacceptable”, stressing that the meetings in question are strictly confidential.
The statement of the Speaker of the Parliament in more detail:
“As is well known, the Hellenic Parliament, through specific prescribed institutional procedures, undertook, in addition to the judiciary, a serious part of control of the case of monitoring the phone of its leader PASOK.
A discussion at the level of party leaders is foreseen on Friday 26/8, a discussion and decision of the Plenary on the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry on Monday 29/8, based on the new revised constitutional provision of November 2019 and already today the Institutions and Transparency Committee expressed the required positive opinion for the appointment of Ambassador Mr. Demiris, as the new administrator of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
However, the meeting in question, despite its strictly confidential nature, was broadcast during its conduct selectively on a specific media outlet, thus turning the whole process into a “strainer”, giving the impression that the invocation of institutional procedures is completely pretentious and the only thing that is of interest in the end is the unanswered, and thus uncontrolled, publicity, precisely because the responsible and named institutional bodies are unable to answer. I note here that based on the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, the discussions on the EYP are confidential and those who take part in them are committed to maintaining confidentiality even after the end of their term of office.
Conducting audits and seeking corrections in matters related to EYP they must move forward, but also guard against their transformation into a selective, illegal and out-of-control daily reading of distortions, which ultimately becomes a dead end in terms of the intended result.
As President of the Hellenic Parliament, I feel the need today, at the beginning of these procedures, to emphasize the need to faithfully observe the prescribed procedures. It is not possible to ask for the activation of Committees and institutional initiatives and at the same time despise and trample on their mode of operation, on which we have all agreed. I have already contacted and sought from all the parties their responsible attitude and support in this regard”.
