The French Foreign Minister goes to Turkey to “encourage” it in its “positive” actions

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna travels to Turkey today to encourage it to continue its “positive” actions in the war in Ukraine and to “remain consistent with the efforts of the United Nations.”

“I will go to Ankara and Istanbul in person this afternoon,” he told RTL radio.

“Turkey, which has an active role in the region, (…) sometimes plays a positive role (…) we must encourage it in this direction and ensure that it remains consistent with the efforts of the United Nations,” write down.

After brokering to allow the resumption of Ukrainian grain shipments from the port of Odessa this summer following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday offered his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Turkey’s mediation. to help resolve the crisis over Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which has been seized by Russian troops.

Turkey maintains good relations with both Moscow and Kyiv.

Despite supplying Kyiv with military drones, Ankara has refused to join Western sanctions imposed on Russia after the start of its military operation in Ukraine.

“Europe has imposed sanctions, the US has also, so have some allied countries and partners, but others have not adopted a sanctions policy, for example Turkey (…). It is important to ensure that the countries that have not imposed sanctions they are not used as a basis for circumventing the sanctions that most of the international community has adopted,” Colonna assured, arguing that the sanctions against Russia “are working and will have more and more results.”

“There are other options for sanctions, particularly individualized ones,” Colonna said after the EU took a raft of measures aimed at hitting the Russian economy.
