The United Kingdom “encourages [Ελλάδα και Τουρκία] to resolve issues through dialogue” noted European Undersecretary Graham Stewart – who later on Tuesday night moved from Liz Truss to the post of Undersecretary for Climate – in response to a parliamentary question on Tuesday.
The deputy minister was responding to a question from Philhellenic Conservative MP Alberto Costa about the diplomatic steps the Foreign Office is taking to contribute to the de-escalation of tensions between the two countries.
Mr Stewart first said that both countries are close friends and allies of the UK. In addition to the recommendation for dialogue, he said the British government “supports measures aimed at de-escalation and reduction of tensions, including existing conflict avoidance mechanisms within NATO structures”.
The British political official also recalled that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson highlighted these messages in the contacts he had with President Erdogan and Prime Minister Mitsotakis at the NATO summit in Madrid and during phone calls on June 21.
