The next stages of the screening program will cover cervical cancer, colon cancer, cardiovascular and childhood obesity.

The expansion of the preventive examination program, which has already started with send SMS for the prevention of breast cancer, announced the Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris during the inauguration of the Ministry of Health stand in 86th TEF.

The next stages of the screening program will concern cervical cancer, colon cancer, cardiovascular diseases and childhood obesity.

Within the next 10 days we will be ready to go to the next stages of preventive examinations” noted Mr. Pleuris.

Referring to what happened during the one year of his presence at the leadership of the Ministry of Health, he noted that while last year the percentage of people vaccinated against Covid was 50%, this year it has exceeded 80% and that the NHS, despite the pressures and difficulties, endured.

“We have other mutations, we have antiviral drugs that we send daily, we have therapeutic protocols, we also have different mutations that are less lethal and we are closer to normality. And for this reason, like all European countries, we will go into the autumn and winter without unnecessary measures but only with the absolutely necessary ones that we have at the moment and always with the aim of not putting pressure on the national health system” noted Mr. Pleuris .

The reform in Primary Health Care has been completed and is proceeding to Secondary.

At the same time, he emphasized that the reform of Primary Health Care has been completed. “The pandemic has taught us that there is a terrifying gap, that the world is not informed early, as a result of which there is a pressure on the National Health System. All our data showed that 40% to 45% of people who go to hospital emergency rooms if they had a doctor to advise them would not go. Now we have a complete reorganization of the Health Centers together with guaranteed funds of 250 million from the Recovery Fund for the 157 Health Centers and at the same time the personal doctor was instituted” said Mr. Pleuris stressing that more than 2.5 million citizens have already registered with the personal doctor and 3,200 doctors.

“And throughout this four months there will be an effort to fully inform citizens and doctors so that from 1/1 we have the full implementation of the institution, a doctor free of charge for all citizens, for those who until today had to go and pay” he noted the minister of health.

Mr. Pleuris also pointed out that the EOPYY was restructured, which will now operate as an insurance organization focused on the citizen and his needs, that same-sex couples were given the right to be able to donate blood, as well as the right of access for all citizens to health services . He also mentioned that with the new reform framework for assisted reproduction, women were given the opportunity to cryopreserve eggs not only for health reasons but also for social reasons. He also made a special mention of EODY which took the full burden of the pandemic as well as EKAB for the daily battle he fights.

Mr. Pleuris noted that in the context of the next stage of reforms concerning Secondary Health Care, 6,000 positions for the National Health Service have been guaranteed for 2022 and that a corresponding number of positions will be guaranteed for 2023. He also noted that the approximately 12,000 assistants who working in the NHS will remain in their positions as their contracts will be continuously renewed through notices. He also emphasized that 350 million euros have been secured from the Recovery Fund for Secondary Health Care as well as for the operation of new Mental Health Units.

“We had an opposition which unfortunately tried to do everything possible to dynamit an effort. We, in parallel with the management of the pandemic, have to demonstrate a project that closes its first year of operation with a pillar of primary, prevention and assisted care and begins the next stage which has to do with secondary care, staffing, recruitment so that we have a health that will start from prevention, will end at the hospital and will aim not only to cure the disease but to keep the citizens healthy” concluded Mr. Pleuris.

The goal is a human-centered health system

In her greeting, Deputy Health Minister Mina Gaga said that the National Health System of our country in the first phase of the pandemic was an example for the whole world to follow.

“Our goal is a human-centered system. And there is an upgrade of the entire system, starting from the structures where we already have an NSRP for the energy upgrade. We have the Recovery Fund for the upgrade of the structures in the Hospitals and Health Centers and in the Maternal Health structures” noted Mrs. Gaga. At the same time, he emphasized that in addition to the upgrade, the health system is also being reorganized so that there is a standardized course in the management of the patient from the point of first care to their transfer to the hospital where in the TEP they will be treated by several specialties.

“The TEPs become unified, where the patient enters the bed, he is checked there regardless of why he went there, if for example he went for an accident so that a wound can be bandaged and, at the same time, if he has a tachycardia, he can be seen by the cardiologist without being transferred from clinic to clinic and wait,” added Ms. Gaga.

The budget for mental health was boosted by 62%

The Deputy Minister of Health (responsible for mental health issues) Zoe Rapti mentioned in her greeting that in previous years the mental health sector was underfunded, that now the Prime Minister has created a portfolio for mental health and addiction. And that 100 psychiatrists and psychologists were hired while the mental health budget was increased by 62%.

“During the pandemic we all realized that mental health is inextricably linked to physical health and is equally important. This was also underlined by the World Health Organization and for this reason in the ministry we created on the one hand new beds in the hospital of Alexandroupoli, in Karamandanio as well as the Asklepiio of Voula but also with donations, such as the Angelikousis donation to the hospital in Nice. At the same time, what we asked for and which is being implemented today were resources from the Recovery Fund with acts of integration for the creation of new structures and services. We will have, after competitive processes, which are now underway, in 2022 and 2023 new mental health structures which will concern Health Centers for children and adolescents, for family support, for the support of people with dementia and Alzheimer’s and at the same time other structures which concern mobile units to go to the most remote villages of the country. And of course telepsychiatry, it is something that the pandemic gave us, it is a gift of the pandemic where we understood how important remote assistance is and we have already started emblematic mental health structures from Kastelorizo and continue in remote areas of the country and uninhabited islands” noted Ms. Rapti.
