Oikonomou: We are reacting calmly to Turkey’s tantrum, we must be vigilant

“The government, with its policy, does not leave anyone without support,” the government representative emphasized

We are reacting to Turkey’s rhetorical frenzy with calmness and sobriety, the government representative underlined Giannis Oikonomou in a radio interview on Parapolitika FM.

Referring to the Turkish provocations, Mr. Economou characteristically pointed out that “a rhetorical frenzy has been going on for a very long time. There is an antagonism of the Turkish political leadership – both the government and the opposition – in the rhetorical aggression against Greece. We react to them calmly and soberly. We debunk anecdotal and unsubstantiated claims in all forums with bipartisan updates. The results show that the appeal of our positions is widening and that the strength of the arguments, which are based on International Law and Greece’s respect for international Treaties, leave no window to the distortion that Turkey has been persistently attempting throughout the previous period. Apart from these, there is also a propaganda going on which has escalated in recent times, an instrumentalization of refugees and immigrants.

We must therefore be fully alert, our reflexes activated to the absolute extent and apply a policy that we know has yielded very good results throughout the previous period: By guarding our borders in the Aegean, with the fence on the Evros , by making use of all the people who are charged with this task, to do their work in a correct way and always, of course, with respect for the rules in force and with humanitarian sensitivity, as we have proven many times”.

The government, with its policy, does not leave anyone without support

Pointing out that the government is fully aware of the difficulties the country and its citizens are going through and that is why it has already outlined a road map in order to keep the economy afloat and society cohesive, the government representative said that with its policy it does not leave anyone without support.

“Support significant enough so that the price hikes have as little impact on all of our lives as possible. Our country implements the largest energy support program in Europe in terms of electricity. Many times it has purposefully strengthened large social groups, especially the most vulnerable, to cope with the increases and the precision of consumer goods. During the pandemic, with 40 billion, we kept the economy afloat and society, households, businesses, and workers cohesive.”

He added that “the road map has already been described. We have proven throughout the previous period that due to the fact that everything we announce is well measured both in terms of its effectiveness, but also in terms of the endurance of the economy, we can respond to the needs and expectations of the world in very much. Whatever new possibility is created, it is used in this direction. We are also awaiting European decisions, which may further facilitate the member states, so that, in addition to the national plan, other possibilities may arise. The announcement of the measures for natural gas is pending in the next period and we are here, implementing a policy that allows us to stand by the citizen essentially. I repeat with results, not just words, so that we can get through the complexities before us with the least possible damage.”

We are bound to move within a limit of certain rules of balance

“There are specific protocols that the National Intelligence Service must follow, when it makes certain moves,” emphasized Mr. Oikonomou, moving on to the issue of the legal connection of Mr. Androulakis’s phone. “This is a practice carried out by the National Intelligence Service, according to the rules, the framework that operates and the protocols that are in place. All this, I imagine, will be informed by Mr. Androulakis, if he responds and goes to the National Intelligence Service to give him the information they can regarding the legal connection of his phone. As for the legal character of the connection, as the debate progresses in the Commission of Inquiry and elsewhere, it shows that it is no longer disputed anywhere.

As far as privacy is concerned, I think the prime minister was completely clear and clear at the Thessaloniki International Exhibition. Obviously, there is an element of secrecy when it comes to cases handled by the National Intelligence Service. We have said many times that the EYP is not just any public service, this phenomenon is not only Greek. It concerns the operating framework of secret services around the world. A horizontal repeal of provisions, a framework that has been in place for years and that would allow elements of secret services to become a flyer in the public debate, is not something for the benefit and interest of neither the country, nor the framework of operation of these services”.

Underlining that “we all agree in the direction that we want to know everything related to this case, within the framework of the rules that exist”, he pointed out at the same time that “what is not disputed is that there is a specific framework and that we are obliged to act in a limit of specific equilibrium rules’.

Our pursuit is the formation of yet another great social alliance and majority

Then Mr. Economou emphasized that “everyone should refocus on the critical questions of what their proposal is and what exactly they have to say to the Greek people about the Greece of tomorrow. Because at some point, beyond superficial approaches to the big pan-European and global issues concerning society – because we have seen this from the opposition – the world requires deeper knowledge, so that there can be a substantial approach and proposals that can be implemented, on how these challenges will be met. We have not seen this on the one hand and on the other we see a monoculture of the specific issue of current affairs which is a serious issue, but it is neither the only one, nor the major one, that concerns society and citizens.

The country has a choice, in our opinion, not to risk what we have achieved recently, not to choose social and economic fixation, instead of the economic development we are achieving in particularly difficult conditions. To continue the path of advance, of ascent, the path of strengthening it both geo-military and geo-politically. All this when the time comes, the world will evaluate it, it will compare a government that in a very unfavorable environment, perhaps the most unfavorable since World War II and after, never stopped managing crises and responding to these challenges in a satisfactory way , simultaneously opening roads for society and citizens. And this is not something theoretical. The people who didn’t have a job see it, the people who pay less taxes see it, the kids in the schools see it with the new programs.

We believe in strong governments. We believe that strong governments are necessary for a self-reliant Greece. Strong parliamentary autonomy is needed. But this does not mean a government with people from only one party.

Our main goal is for people to trust New Democracy on their own. From then on and in the current New Democracy government, not only in government positions, but also elsewhere in the state apparatus, people who do not come from the New Democracy party only participated and continue to participate. They are people who embrace the view we have about the future of the country.

Our pursuit is the formation of yet another large social alliance and majority, which will obviously be reflected in the formation of the next government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis”, concluded Mr. Economou.
