Mitsotakis meets with delegations of American-Jewish organizations in New York – Government sources say that during the meetings the Prime Minister pointed out the particularly close strategic cooperation between Greece and Israel

The prime minister met with a delegation of five American Jewish organizations on Wednesday Kyriakos Mitsotakis, while afterwards he had a separate meeting with the president and senior officials of the American Jewish organization AIPAC, in the context of his contacts during the High Level Week of the 77th UN General Assembly, in New York.

Government sources say that during the meetings the prime minister highlighted the particularly close strategic cooperation between Greece and Israel on a wide range of issues, including security and energy, but also the prospect of further tightening of relations both bilaterally and through of the multilateral schemes in which the two countries participate.

The same sources note that Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of the Greek and Jewish diaspora in promoting cooperation between Greece, Israel and the United States for the formation of a new security architecture in the eastern Mediterranean region, especially at the present time, when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has highlighted the dangers of revisionism and the questioning of international legitimacy.

In this context, the prime minister informed his interlocutors about the escalating rhetoric from the Turkish leadershipand the instrumentalization of immigration by Ankara, emphasizing the direct questioning of Greek sovereignty and misinformation incidents of the international community at the expense of our country.

The Prime Minister referred in particular to the role of Greece as a hub for the influx of energy into Europe, while pointing out that our country firmly supports the expansion and deepening of cooperation between Israel and the European Union.

He also reaffirmed Greece’s absolute commitment to combating anti-Semitism and the distortion of the historical truth regarding the Holocaust.

He underlined that Greece has adopted the Working Definitions of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) on Anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial, while holding the rotating presidency of the IHRA in 2021, he emphasized education and countering disinformation , especially on the internet, while at the same time he has launched the construction of a Holocaust museum in Thessaloniki, under the supervision of the Deputy Prime Minister Panagiotis Pikramenou.
