Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a meeting with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in Sophiabefore the opening ceremony of the Greece-Bulgaria IGB interconnector pipeline.

The two leaders provided a comprehensive overview of bilateral relations and analyzed the prospects for further development of economic and trade cooperation, with an emphasis on the energy sector.

The importance of the TAP pipeline passing through Greece for the diversification of Europe’s energy supply sources and the role of the “Southern Corridor” in the policy of the European Union for strengthening energy security and promoting the energy “green” transition were underlined, as well as the strategic cooperation of the two countries.

The prime minister underlined the key role that Greece can play in the energy security and supply of the Balkans and Europe due to its position, both with the infrastructures it forms (Revythoussa, Alexandroupoli) and with the joint ventures in which it participates as a bridge with Africa, such as the Greece-Egypt electrical interconnection.

During the meeting, regional and international developments were also discussed with an emphasis on the Eastern Mediterranean and Ukraine.
