The Minister of Immigration and Asylum is in Cyprus Notis Mitarakis, who, together with the competent ministers for immigration and asylum issues of Cyprus, Italy, Spain and Malta, participates in the Ministerial Summit of the Mediterranean Frontline States (MED5) in Paphos.

The work of the Synod, which is hosted by the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Cyprus and which aims to continue constructive cooperation to achieve common goals and a mutual strategy in the field of asylum and immigration, started yesterday Thursday afternoon.

The work of the Synod is also attended by the Minister of the Interior of the country holding the presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Czech Republic, Vít Rakušan, while the program also includes an online greeting by the Commissioner for Home Affairs of the European Commission, Ylva Johansson.

The Synod was preceded by the signing of an Agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and the Czech Republic for financial contribution for the purposes of managing increased migration flows. The financial contribution, on the part of the Czech government, amounting to one million euros, within 2022, will be allocated to the financing of the voluntary returns of those migrants whose applications have been rejected, thus contributing decisively to the maximization of the objective set by the at the beginning of the year we set and which we consistently serve by achieving up to this moment the return of almost 5000 persons to their countries of origin, stated the Minister of the Interior of Cyprus Nikos Nouris, pointing out that at the same time as the agreement that has been signed remains open the possibility for further support of the Republic of Cyprus in the coming years.

I therefore feel the need but also the obligation to express our thanks and gratitude to the Czech Republic and especially to the First Vice-President and the Minister of the Interior of the country, Mr. Vít RakuÅ¡an for this initiative and their practical contribution for financial support of the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus”, he concluded.

In the Czech Republic we have over 400,000 refugees from Ukraine. This is 3.8% of our population – a very large number. Also, the numbers from illegal immigration through the Czech Republic are now higher than ever. Therefore, we can understand your situation very well. And if we want to face this crisis in Europe, we need to know what solidarity means, said Mr. Rakušan.

The official dinner, which followed the agreement on Friday evening, was graced by the presence of the Speaker of the Parliament A. Dimitriou.

With the end of the work of the Synod, the issuance of a joint statement of the ministers is expected, in view of the upcoming Council of Internal Affairs of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU in Luxembourg and the holding of a joint press conference today at 12.45 pm.
