Nikos Androulakis: A new special EU-Turkey relationship is needed with a mechanism of automatic sanctions and an arms embargo

by

“Not a single European sphere should be sold to Turkey when it is a factor of instability from the South Caucasus, the Middle East and the South-East Mediterranean” argued the president of PASOK-Movement for Change

“A new architecture of EU-Turkey relations is needed”, said the president of PASOK-Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakisin an interview with him, in the morning, on the show “Society hour MEGA”.

“You cannot say that a country that violates human rights within itself and directs challenges against all neighboring countries, even towards Greece with the threat of war, is in the process of joining Europe – even formally because everything is frozen. So, we have to go to a special relationship”, noted Mr. Androulakis and explained what he means by this proposal:

Dialogue

“There should be a Turkey-Europe dialogue table, so that in the new economic text relations are determined economically with automated sanctions. When Turkey commits an action against European values or against sovereign rights or against human rights, sanctions should be imposed directly. Turkey without Europe is economically a dwarf. Europe lives the market of Turkey. A lot of Turkey’s exports come to us, they don’t go to Russia. Europe is the protagonist of the economic life of the neighboring country. So there should be such commercial clauses, so that we can put pressure on Turkey effectively and not theoretically.”

The president of PASOK-KINAL commented on the continued provocation of the Turkish leadership, stressing that “an Erdogan, who is in danger and has formed a regime function, is dangerous both for his people and for the neighboring countries” and adding that Turkey is not only Erdogan . “If we exclude the pro-Kurdish HDP party which has often stood up to the policies of extremism, as for example when the Hagia Sophia was turned into a mosque, we see that Mr. Kilicdaroglu also often talks about 18 islands, so we see that in total, beyond Erdogan, there is an escalation in Turkey against neighboring areas. In other words, nationalism is now a dominant phenomenon, which also educates public opinion”, pointed out the president of PASOK-KINAL.

In addition, he reiterated the firm position that an arms embargo should be imposed on Turkey by EU countries, arguing that “not a single European bullet should be sold to Turkey when it is a factor of instability from the South Caucasus, the Middle East and the southeast Mediterranean . Two years ago, for the first time, I succeeded in getting the European Parliament to vote for an arms embargo on Turkey, and even half of Germany’s political system voted for it.”

Accuracy

For the enhanced accuracy and the increased energy costs, which reduce the purchasing power of households, Mr. Androulakis mentioned that 1.1 billion of the subsidies comes from the state budget and 800 million comes from the super profits of the energy companies. “For whole months it was 400 million, when we said it was much more, and suddenly it becomes 800 million in two months. They make up the numbers. And it is unthinkable that they have a policy that enables the provider to make super profits too. Who pays for all this? The budget. The Greek people. They take them from one pocket and put them in the other. This mechanism works for the few. New Democracy maintains that it is next to the citizen, but it is next to the interests”, he underlined.

He also highlighted the PASOK-Movement for Change proposal to impose a ceiling on the retail price of energy, while noting that private debt is galloping again and presented the Movement’s recent initiative for 120 doses for the debts to EFKA and the tax office. He announced that “PASOK-KINAL will immediately bring a legislative framework to re-protect the first home, as the middle class and vulnerable households are also affected”.

Asked about the wiretapping case, Mr. Androulakis replied that for him it is clear that there was an unacceptable parastatal act, accusing the government of “trying to cover up a scandal through a secrecy mechanism”.
