In the context of a meeting with the independent candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, the President of PASOK-Movement for Change pointed out against the background of the intensifying Turkish provocation that “the Turkish President imitates Putin’s revisionism and that is why our partners must support the efforts we are making to establish an arms embargo in Turkey as well as a framework respect for our sovereign rights and international law in the wider region. There is no other path for peace and prosperity in the wider region.”

Mr. Addressing Mr. Nikos Christodoulidis, Nikos Androulakis noted: “As a young politician, you can achieve a lot for Cypriot Hellenism.”

“It is important for Greece and Cyprus, in the phase of a very specific strategy, to deal with this revisionist – as you have very aptly described it – behavior that does not differ at all from what it sees as the result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” stressed the Mr. Christodoulidis.

Here are the positions of the President of PASOK-Movement for Change and the Candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus:

Nikos Androulakis: Dear friend Nikos, I welcome you here to the offices of our Parliamentary Group. I wish you good luck in your fight. It is a very critical period for Cypriot Hellenism and for our homeland with the incredible geopolitical challenges, with the war and Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, but also with the terrible challenges of Erdogan in both Cyprus and Greece. Unfortunately we see that many times mimics Putin’s revisionism. That is why our partners must support the efforts we are making to establish an arms embargo in Turkey, as well as a framework of respect for our sovereign rights and international law in the wider region.

There is no other path to peace and prosperity and I am sure that your candidacy is moving along this path and I believe that as a young politician you can achieve many things for Cypriot Hellenism.

Nikos Christodoulidis: Friend Nikos, thank you very much for the meeting. It’s always a pleasure to meet and talk with you. Indeed, I completely agree with what you mentioned above. We live in difficult and critical moments, taking into account the daily rhetoric from Mr. Erdogan and other Turkish officials. And it is important for Greece and Cyprus, in the phase of a very specific strategy, to face on the one hand this revisionist – as you have very aptly characterized it – behavior that is not at all different from what it sees as the result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, an illegal invasion, for which there was a substantial reaction on the part of the European Union and the same reaction possibly and even more should occur for the violations and violations against member states of the European Union such as Greece and Cyprus.

Besides that we are two countries which wish to have good relations with all our neighbors and within this context we wish to have excellent relations with Turkey as well. We cannot change the geography and within this context you understand that the priority is to resolve the Cyprus issue based on the framework of the United Nations and the principles and values of the European Union. I am strongly convinced, and you know very well from your term in the European Parliament, that the European Union can play a decisive role not only for the resumption of meaningful talks, but also for the resolution of the Cyprus issue, which is the key issue that will unlock the Greek-Turkish relationships. So I am here to exchange views on all these issues and specifically, dear Nikos, on the role that the European Union can play in this direction.
