Tsipras: The battle against human trafficking must begin with the reconstruction of the Social State

“The weak Welfare State makes more people vulnerable to exploitation of man by man. The crooked Rule of Law ensures impunity and a sense of omnipotence to corrupt people,” he said.

“Unfortunately, human trafficking does not belong to distant times and distant places. We witness this brutality every day”, emphasizes the president of SYRIZA-PS, Alexis Tsipras in his post on the occasion of Pan-European Day Against Trafficking in Human Beings.

“On our borders, where people are persecuted and fall victim to this brutality. In our neighborhoods. Manolada and Ilioupoli last year, Kolonos now, are not black exceptions in the history of the country, but a grim reality for dozens of our fellow human beings”, notes Al. Tsipras, pointing out that “almost 80% of the victims of human trafficking in Greece are women and girls”.

“Poverty and social exclusion prevail in single-parent families, headed by women, and in children, according to ELSTAT. Poverty and social exclusion – these two elements are not unrelated and we are well aware of that,” he emphasizes.

“The battle against human trafficking it must begin with the reconstruction of the Social State and the strengthening of the Rule of Law”, he adds and explains:

“The weak Welfare State makes more people vulnerable to exploitation of man by man. The crooked Rule of Law ensures impunity and a sense of omnipotence to corrupt people.”

“Soon, we will continue the work we started in 2015 to fight this heinous crime, by strengthening the prosecution and the protection and reintegration of victims of human trafficking”, concludes Al. Tsipras.
