The first exclusive underwater photos of the natural gas pipeline Nord Stream 1 at the bottom of the Baltic Sea (80 meters below the surface) at the point where the explosion ruptured the pipe, Swedish newspaper Expressen reported.

At least fifty meters of the natural gas line appear to have been damaged after the explosion, which shows its power. A preliminary investigation into the damage to the two Nord Stream gas pipelines showed that the leaks were caused by “strong explosions”, Copenhagen Police said in a statement today.

The further investigation into the leaks found on 26 September in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in Denmark’s exclusive economic zone will be carried out jointly by the Copenhagen Police and the Danish Security and Intelligence Service.

“It is still too early to say anything about the context in which international cooperation will develop, for example with Sweden and Germany, as it depends on several factors,” Copenhagen Police said.

For their part, German investigators have not yet been able to identify those involved in the gas pipeline accident, but suspect that Russia may be behind the sabotage.

The European Union is stepping up efforts to protect critical infrastructure from acts of sabotage after damage to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines showed Europe’s vulnerability.

According to Bloomberg, the Commission will propose this week to member countries to strengthen their cooperation and carry out stress tests in basic infrastructure, starting with those in the energy sector and then continuing with high-risk sectors such as telecommunications, transport and space.
