In agreement order to hold a European Conference in Greece in 2023following the Vilnius initiative, the Minister of Immigration and Asylum proceeded, Notis Mitarakiswith the Austrian Federal Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Karnerin Vienna, according to a statement.
In joint statements issued after the end of their meeting, the two ministers “underlined the need to strengthen cooperation in the management of immigration.” At the same time, they emphasized the need to continue the Vilnius initiative in which Greece, Austria, Lithuania, Poland had participated and which concerned the strengthening of the external borders of the European Union.
This time the European Conference is expected to take place in our country within the first seven months of 2023 and its central theme will be the limitation of migration flows to the European Union.
Mr. Mitarakis in his statement “sealed the excellent cooperation between Greece and Austria in terms of immigration management, while at the same time he referred to the imperative need for a common European border management policy of the Union, in accordance with the rules of International Law, which will be a priority not only for the countries that are on the front line, such as Greece and the MED5, but also for all European countries,” the statement says.
Referring to the practice followed by Turkey in recent days, Mr. Mitarakis stated that “the shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea and the shameful incident in Evros with the 92 naked migrants, increasingly demand the need for Turkey to undertake the commitments and its obligations”.
Mr. Mitarakis reminded, among other things, “the obligation to implement the European Union-Turkey Joint Declaration of 2016, as Turkey committed to implement”.
In closing, Mr. Mitarakis underlined “the importance of finding solutions that will allow solidarity between all countries, ensuring, at the same time, a fair distribution of the immigration burden”.
For his part, Mr. Karner “thanked Mr. Mitarakis and Greece as a whole for the effective management of immigration and the fight against smugglers.”
In particular, Mr. Karner emphasized that “a greater and common goal should be the prevention of illegal immigration flows and the limitation of smuggling rings”. At the same time, the Austrian minister, underlining “the importance of strengthening European cohesion and the adoption of a common policy in the management of immigration, confirmed that the system at the external borders is at the limits of its capabilities and that is why it is necessary to deal with the issue as a whole. »
Finally, Mr. Karner pointed out that new measures should be taken at the European level and new regulations should be created to prevent incidents like those that have seen the light of day.
