Sakellaropoulou’s message to Turkey: Open to dialogue, but ready to defend our national sovereignty

by

The PtD spoke about the role of the Armed Forces in today’s conditions, stressing that “the fighting spirit and high spirit of all these generations guides you in your sacred mission, in times of peace but also in times of insecurity and trial, such as the one we are experiencing today in Europe”

“We are open to dialogue, but we are also ready to defend our national sovereignty and our sovereign rights, if this is necessary”, emphasized the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropouloureferring to the escalation of challenges on the part of Turkey, at the expense of Greece, and the promotion of non-existent positions, such as the demilitarization of the Greek islands, during her opposition, at the official dinner hosted in her honor by the commander of the 3rd Army Corps , lieutenant general Sotirios Kostakoglou, in the Officers’ Club.

Mrs. Sakellaropoulou referred to the escalation of challenges on the part of Turkey and the attitude of Greece, saying that our country seeks calm in relations and open channels, but the dialogue to bear fruit cannot be done under a regime of threats and tensions.

“Recently, Turkey appears to select sharpening again, by escalating the challenges, by restoring the known practices and by projecting new non-existent positions for the demilitarization of our islands, while continuing to instrumentalize the pain of refugees and immigrants, who leave their ancestral homes in search of a better life”, he said and added:

“Greece seeks calm in relations with its neighbors and open channels of communication. But the dialogue, in order to materialize and bear fruit, cannot take place under a regime of threats and tensions, but only on the basis of international law and the principles of good neighborliness. At the same time, our country is constantly strengthening its position, diplomatic and military, through its cooperation and strategic alliances, underlining the non-existence of Turkish claims and seeking to consolidate peace and stability in the Southeast Mediterranean.

As I have emphasized before, we are open to dialogue, but we are also ready to defend our national sovereignty and sovereign rights, if necessary.

The Cypriot, moreover, continues to be a top national issue. The Turkish aggression in Varosia, in the maritime zones of the Republic of Cyprus and in our wider region are not going to bend our commitment to our common goal: the resumption of negotiations for its comprehensive solution on the basis of the relevant Resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

“It is with great pleasure that I am, on the day of the anniversary of the liberation of Thessaloniki from the Turkish yoke and the feast of the patron Saint Demetrius, at the Thessaloniki Guard Officers’ Club, in the historic 3rd Army Corps, among the officers and non-commissioned officers, women and men of the Armed Forces,” said Mrs. Sakellaropoulou at the beginning of her objection and continued: “You are the living continuation of the liberation army of the Balkan Wars, which at dawn on October 26, 1912, entered the city victoriously. Those who, within a few years, almost doubled the size of the country and integrated precious pieces of Hellenism into the national core. And of the heroes of NO, who in the snowy mountains of Epirus and in the fortresses of Macedonia stopped the troops of fascist Italy and fought heroically against Nazi Germany”.

About her invasion of Russia in Ukraine he said that it is the business of all of us and noted that “it is the duty of the European Union and the international community to defend the security and stability of our world against authoritarian revisionism and provocative rhetoric”.

The President of the Republic spoke about the role of the Armed Forces in today’s conditions, stressing that “the fighting spirit and high spirit of all these generations guides you in your sacred mission, in times of peace but also in times of insecurity and trial, such as the one that we are experiencing today in Europe” and continued:

“The Russian attack on Ukraine is not only about the heroic Ukrainian people, who are giving their blood and soul for their freedom and political autonomy. It’s up to all of us. With the brutal violation of international law and the threat of mass destruction, the revision of the post-war acquis of peace and progress is attempted. And it suggests a direct and full-frontal questioning of liberal democracy and European values. It is the duty of the European Union and the international community to defend the security and stability of our world against authoritarian revisionism and provocative rhetoric.”

The Armed Forces, with the perfect level of training, preparedness and patriotic ethos that characterizes them, are the guarantor of our national sovereignty and the security of the Greek and European borders. Gratitude to all of you, the watchful guards, who selflessly protect the homeland from land, air and sea, day and night, even in the most difficult conditions, is the least we owe you.”
