The Prime Minister completed his first visit to Estonia today – Ukraine, energy crisis and Turkish provocations in the Aegean at the center of meetings with the President and Prime Minister of Estonia
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis completed his first visit to Estonia today, which marks 100 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries this year.
During the Prime Minister’s meetings with its President of Estonia Alar Karis, the Estonian counterpart of Kaja Kallas and the Speaker of the Parliament Jüri Ratas, confirmed the very good level of bilateral relations.
It was also agreed that there is potential for their further deepening, particularly, as discussed in the meeting of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Kaja Kallas, in the areas of economic and investment cooperation, digital transformation – in which there is already cooperation between the two countries – and cyber security. The digital sector, in which Estonia is a pioneer, also had a central role in all of the Prime Minister’s contacts.
Particular emphasis during the meetings was given to the issue of energy and the energy crisis, as well as the green transition. The Prime Minister underlined the need for common European solutions to the energy crisis and excessive price volatility caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
He also emphasized that the assistance of the EU and its member states to Ukraine must continue, until the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity are restored. He pointed out the criticality of the existence of a stable front against revisionism and in favor of commitment to International Law and to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, which are non-negotiable.
The Prime Minister informed his interlocutors about the latest developments regarding the aggressive behavior and rhetoric of the Turkish leadership in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean that undermine stability and security in the region and reiterated that Greece is in favor of understanding and dialogue , will not accept, however, any questioning of Greek sovereignty.
The need for a coordinated response to the migration challenges at the EU’s external borders and in particular the threat of instrumentalization of migration flows was also discussed.
