Energy and Greek-Turkish on the Greek agenda

By Penelope Galliou

A week after visit of the German chancellor Olaf Scholz to Athens, where it was found that there was an alignment of opinions on major and burning issues facing Europe as well as Greece and Germany, the Greek Prime Minister is going to Berlin today, in the context of the meeting of the leaders of the Western Balkans and is expected to meet again within a few days for the second time with the German chancellor.

A meeting in which Kyriakos Mitsotakis – despite the few days that have passed since the previous meeting of the two leaders in Athens – has to expose Ankara’s new challenges both at the immigration level with the episode off the coast of Samos, as well as the new lion attacks and Ankara’s threats that reached the point of bringing the casus belli to the fore again in the Aegean. While Tayyip Erdogan he hastened to contact Olaf Soltz in order to complain to him and to express his displeasure at the abandonment of Germany’s policy of equal distance on Greek-Turkish issues.

In addition to the German chancellor, the Greek prime minister, during the Berlin Process, will also talk to his counterparts about the Greek-Turkish language and inform them about Turkey’s incendiary and aggressive rhetoric.

During his participation in Meeting of the Berlin Process Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to government sources, is expected to highlight the leading role of Greece, not only as a pillar of stability and security in the region, but also as a key force for energy security and the diversification of energy sources in the Balkans and Southeast Europe, an issue that becomes even more pressing after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

After all, Greece considers that the regional integration of the Western Balkans is an investment in their security, stability and development, a fact that the prime minister will emphasize, underlining the key role that energy cooperation has, especially in the current geopolitical landscape. In this context, moreover, Greece firmly supports the European perspective of the Western Balkans. Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to make special mention of the issues of energy security and energy transformation, a fact that is indicative of the importance attributed to Greece’s key role in the region, but also of the recognition of the initiatives it has undertaken with the infrastructure it is developing for diversification of energy sources and the energy security of the entire region. After all, from the early stages of the energy crisis in Europe, Greece intervened actively and dynamically to support the Balkans, already proving it with the example of Bulgaria, as well as with the operation of the Greek-Bulgarian IGB pipeline.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis will also have a meeting with the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyenwho will “attend” the Summit, as will the President of the European Council Charles Michel, while with the end of the Berlin Process there will be the adoption of a joint Declaration on energy security and the green transition in the Western Balkans.
