In a productive atmosphere, the working meeting between the Minister of State Mr. Giorgos Gerapetritis and the members of the PEGA Examining Committee of the European Parliament.
Mr. Gerapetritis referred to the government’s clear position of “transparency everywhere”, while he commented on the attempt by the Opposition – mainly SYRIZA – to raise suspicions against the Government for using malicious software for petty political reasons, although none of its claims proved in the context of the parliamentary audit that has been completed.
He pointed out that from the first moment the Greek government sought the fastest possible clarification of the case in order to illuminate all aspects of it and answer all questions.
He characteristically noted that the Prime Minister, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, acted immediately and decisively as soon as the information came to his attention.
The Minister of State informed the members of the PEGA Committee that the Government – as announced by the Prime Minister and specified in Parliament himself – has already undertaken a broader legislative initiative which is expected to be submitted to Parliament in Novemberwhich will on the one hand provide for tough regulations against malicious software and on the other hand strengthen the transparency regime of legal connections, noting that a double safety valve has already been legislated for the removal of secrets for reasons of national security as the signature of a 2nd public prosecutor is now foreseen.
With the new restrictive framework, which will universally ban the marketing of malicious software, Greece will be the first country in the EU to provide for such a thing and will aim to ensure accountability, but also to serve the need of national security. For this purpose, the proposals formulated by the Parliament’s Inquiry Committee will be used, which can identify long-standing pathologies and propose regulations to deal with them.
Mr. Gerapetritis also pointed out that the proposals of the Government cfor the upgrading of the institutional framework, they provide schematically:
– The strengthening of the framework of legal lifting of privacy for political persons.
– Changes within EYP to strengthen internal control, transparency, extroversion and training of its human resources.
– The ban on the sale of surveillance software to private individuals and the establishment of an independent provision that will prohibit and punish the sale (sale and purchase) of surveillance software to private individuals.
– Interventions in the context of the protection of personal data, organizational strengthening of the Anti-Corruption Commission for the performance of its constitutional role, creation of a Cyber ​​Security body as a coordinating mechanism, re-evaluation of the institutional framework for notification to the subject, regarding the enforcement against him of the restrictive measure of the removal of confidentiality, investment to protect the country’s critical infrastructure from security threats and invest Recovery Fund resources in this direction.
