SYRIZA and PASOK are still going their separate ways

SYRIZA believes that after the issue of surveillance, the rift between PASOK and ND cannot be closed

By Antonis Anzoletou

“Together they can’t and apart… they can.” This is how the relationship between SYRIZA and PASOK can be described, which, despite the convergences in various fields, still look like “two strangers”. One element which so far does not seem to favor Harilaou Trikoupi, with the tide leaning towards Koumoundourou, is that the two parties are going with the same agenda towards the elections: accuracy and monitoring. Many times, they even show that they raise the case of wiretapping as high as the price increases in the market.

During the press conference of Nikos Androulakis about the surveillance, it appeared that SYRIZA and PASOK they are also completely in line with the opinion that the elections cannot be held if ample light has not been shed on the case with the predator. “Within this climate, it is absolutely clear that the Judiciary must speed up the procedures, we must know the whole truth before the elections and the Prime Minister must follow the only path left to him. The elections should be held in a clear landscape, without shadows. And this is his responsibility”, said Nikos Androulakis. Alexis Tsipras has formulated exactly the same line with the government, even accusing him of “preparing his defeat”.

In SYRIZA, they are not waiting for the final stretch before the elections Nikos Androulakis to open his papers. They estimate, however, that the rift with New Democracy, after the monitoring of the president of PASOK by the EYP, cannot be restored. The party founded by Andreas Papandreou is trying to “break away” from the zone of 11%-12% that the latest opinion polls bring it. The two were on the streets at the great general strike on November 9 and at the anniversary celebration of the Polytechnic University. They will form a front against the government in the budget that will be voted on December 17. Could these be the ‘glue’ that will bind them together? PASOK’s final position in relation to the EYP bill was expected by SYRIZA until yesterday. They welcomed Mr. Androulakis’s report that since the role of the Anti-Corruption Commission is being undermined, they will oppose the government’s proposal.

Last week on the bill on the excess profits from electricity suppliers the two parties did not keep up on the vote. SYRIZA voted against it and PASOK chose “present”. Phase difference and other readings in the arrangements brought by the majority in Parliament have always existed. In Koumoundourou they believe that as long as the scissors with the New Democracy decreases (this is what they expect from the next measurements) so Harilaou Trikoupi will be under pressure. In general, the heated political climate always helps the two powerful poles of power. Therefore, any reaction recorded by the green camp is considered normal.

PASOK believes that the political interventions made by Nikos Androulakis regarding the wiretapping by the EYP will not remain in the dark as they concern the essence of the case. As an example, yesterday he brought the government’s retreat, which, as he claims, was seen through the bill for the EYP. “Under the fear of condemnation at the European level and our pressure, the government brought a draft law, which despite some positive elements, does not touch the core of the serious pathologies of the system. In a disorderly retreat, he canceled the right-wing aphorisms that no one is exempt from the control of the EYP, much more the elected representatives of the people who could damage the national interests more crucially than the “neighborhood kiosk”, said the head of Harilaou Trikoupi.

SYRIZA insists on the high personal tones against the prime minister, as well as on the pressuring, asking for the fourth consecutive Friday that Kyriakos Mitsotakis be in the Parliament and to answer the question of Alexis Tsipras. However, where PASOK seems to be ahead of SYRIZA is the compilation of ballots. Many names have already been leaked and are definitely appearing for the lists. By the time of the meeting of the Central Committee (December 10-11 most likely) it is expected that the last loopholes will have been closed.
