Government sources estimate that the surveillance issue has caused little damage to the government

By Penelope Galliou

The government is turning to society and the everyday life of the citizens while simultaneously promoting the government’s work, – after the turmoil caused by the surveillance case – considering that it is returning to its “field”, where it has the lead over SYRIZA and the opposition it exercises with communicative criteria only. The prime minister sets the tone once again by continuing his tours around Greece and communicating government initiatives and their results, paving the way for the pre-election period that has already begun, albeit informally.

In this political environment, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will tour Achaia today and tomorrow, having a series of contacts with local bodies, while he will visit ongoing infrastructure projects in the region, speak at a party event and his tour will conclude with an interview type that he will give in Patras on Wednesday. This is a new framework that the prime minister will follow in all his visits throughout Greece, which will always conclude with a press conference in the capitals of the prefectures in order to project and highlight the government’s work at the local level and the simultaneous fulfillment of the commitments had been undertaken towards the local communities.

Government sources, however, estimate that the issue of surveillance has caused little damage to the government, based on the polls that have seen the light of day as well as those available to the Maximos Palace. The polling picture shows that the case does not create serious tremors and in no way changes the facts in the political scene.

After all, it is estimated that the long pre-election period that will intervene until the spring 2023 polls, is enough to cover any losses that will occur, which have a small footprint. This is also demonstrated by the new Alco poll for Alpha, according to which ND maintains a lead of 7.3 percentage points over SYRIZA. In particular, the ruling party leads with 30.3% against SYRIZA’s 23%, with the difference being one unit smaller than the previous measurement (ND: 31.2%, SYRIZA 22.9%, difference 8.3%).

Under these government officials, we see a dissatisfaction of the citizens that is reflected in polls, but it is due to a dissatisfaction expressed by centrist voters who, however, do not choose to go to the “opposing awe” of the ND but move towards the gray zone of the undecided. For this reason, they estimate that SYRIZA does not record an increase in its opinion polls as Alexis Tsipras is not an option for this public.

However, although Koumoundourou does not receive the messages and the poll percentages she seeks from her opposition tactics, government actors estimate that she will not abandon the tactics of aggravation and mud, insisting on investing in the issue of monitoring, precisely because of the poor proposals and arguments about the major issues that concern the country and society. After all, this is shown – according to government officials – by the insistence for the fourth time in a row – on the part of the president of SYRIZA to submit to the Parliament the current question to the prime minister about surveillance.

An issue for which, for the umpteenth time, the Maximos Palace has declared that the prime minister will give the answers institutionally and overall during the discussion of the bill for the reorganization of the EYP, which has been put to public consultation and it is not excluded that within the week it will be submitted to the Parliament to vote. In addition, any other aspect of the case – apart from the political shield – has already been undertaken by the Justice to investigate and clarify.
