Bilateral Agreement for the employment of 5,000 seasonal land workers signed in Cairo today, Tuesday, November 22, Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis with his Egyptian counterpart for European Affairs Ihab Nasr.

The Interstate Agreement, made for the first time at a diplomatic level, provides for the entry and residence in Greece of labor force from the Arab Republic of Egypt, for the purpose of seasonal employment in the agricultural sector.

These are 5,000 land workers, during the first year of pilot implementation, with a duration of stay of up to nine (9) months per one-year period. The Agreement aims to meet labor needs in the agricultural sector while it can be a “guide” for future agreements of our country and the EU as a whole with third countries to combat illegal immigration.

“Today, with the signing of the Agreement with Egypt, we are satisfying a request of the Greek region, which is asking for more workers to be able to face the growing needs of the agricultural sector,” Mr. Varvitsiotis emphasized. As the Deputy Minister said, “at the same time, a huge step is being taken, as for the first time our country is creating conditions for legal immigration within the framework of an international agreement”. As he explained, the Egyptian authorities will select which Egyptians can come to work in our country for a certain period of time, who will have the obligation to return after this cycle is completed. “For us,” he noted, “it is very important to deepen our relationship with Egypt also in the context of labor movement, and we are happy because the Egyptian authorities ran this agreement very quickly and we hope that the first Egyptian workers at the beginning of next year will are in the Greek fields to help harvest the next crop,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Varvitsiotis attended the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Greece and Egypt for Cooperation in the Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Sectors by the Minister of National Defense Nikos Panagiotopoulos with his Egyptian counterpart, M. Zaki.

Then, together with Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, he participated in the extended talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
