The President of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, has had a series of contacts at the highest political level since the morning in the German capital. Meetings with Steinmeier, Soltz and Merkel.

With a heavy agenda, from the Cyprus issue and the new Turkish threats against Greece and Cyprus, to the war in Ukraine and cooperation in the energy field, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis is today Wednesday in Berlin for a series of contacts at the highest political level. In the morning, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier welcomed his counterpart at the Bellevue presidential palace with bilateral and European issues on the agenda.

According to what has become known so far, Nikos Anastasiadis conveyed to his counterpart the readiness of the Cypriot side for the resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue, but also the need for Turkey to refrain from illegal actions. The focus was also on immigration and the energy prospects of Cyprus as an alternative source of new energy resources for Europe.

Around 5 o’clock German time he is expected at the chancellery, where he will be received by Chancellor Olaf Soltz with military honors and intensive talks for about an hour. For Nicos Anastasiades, it is important that the German side is fully informed about both the Cyprus issue and the escalation of Turkish threats in the eastern Mediterranean in recent months.

After all, 2023 is the year of crucial presidential elections not only in Turkey but also in Cyprus, while the war in Ukraine at the same time poses new challenges for the geopolitical situation. Soltz and Anastasiadis are expected to hold a joint press conference around 18:15 German time.

Will Soltz send the same messages he sent from Athens?

However, all eyes continue to be on the German chancellor: Will he restate what he said in Athens, sending a clear message against Turkish provocation?

Will there be answers also on the issue of the withdrawal of the German Leopard 2 A4 tanks, which are in the occupied areas according to recent data released by the German parliament following a question from the Left Member of Parliament Sevim Dagdelen?

Berlin and Nicosia could work together to support Ukraine, on the model of the agreement on the circular exchange of weapons systems, which is underway with countries such as Greece, Poland or the Czech Republic, especially now that the American arms embargo has been lifted which had been imposed on the Republic of Cyprus in 1987?

It is interesting that after the meeting with the German president and before the contacts at the chancellery, Nikos Anastasiadis on the sidelines of the official program also meets an old acquaintance, the former chancellor Angela Merkel, in her political office. The visit of the President of Cyprus ends tomorrow, Thursday, with a visit to the Jewish Museum in Berlin.
