Mr. Mitarakis pointed out that it is necessary to European solution to this particular issue, pointing out that the new Pact on Migration and Asylum should proceed, which should, however, fulfill two objectives. On the one hand, the substantial reduction of flows to the European Union and the forced provision of solidarity to the first receiving states. Accordingly, Mr. Mitarakis pointed out that it is important to implement the Joint Declaration of 2016 between the European Union and Turkey.

At the same time, the Minister of Immigration and Asylum thanked Mr. Margaritis Schina for his substantial contribution to the timely financing of the European funds to Greece with 1.9 billion euros for the current period for the management of immigration.

For his part, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas noted that “Time is not our ally in immigration management. Developments in the field run much faster than the political clock that has to deal with them. For three years now, the European Commission has been supporting all member states in immigration in two ways, as an architect, but also as a firefighter.” At the same time, Mr. Schinas underlined that tomorrow’s Council of Ministers of Immigration “is an opportunity to restate that in immigration the only path ahead of us is European unity, European solidarity”.
