Why Meloni pursues the “axis of the European south” – The role of Greece

The Italian prime minister seems to be changing the landscape, as Rome is no longer “unequivocally” on the side of Berlin and Paris, political analysts point out

In Italy, everyone was preoccupied with her statement about the Greek “meraki”, with which she told the Italians that one must work with all one’s passion and with great dedication in order to achieve one’s goals. And in her first speech in parliament of Romethe new Italian prime minister had underlined that her country and Hellas they are the cradles of European civilization. Some of her friends tell her that she has a special weakness and has repeatedly visited the Greek resorts.

But it’s not just about that. It is clear that in recent weeks there has been an increasingly obvious turn of Italy towards the other countries of the European south. As far as the energy sector is concerned, there is an absolute identification of views on the proposal with the object of the horizontal ceiling on energy. But also in immigration: Last night the Melon she emphasized again that a European mechanism for repatriations should be put in place and an emphasis should be placed on legal flows, “because her country, together with the other states of first arrival of migrants in the Mediterranean, cannot bear all the relevant burden”.

Political analysts emphasize that in the first month and a half since the establishment of the new government, one can notice that, on the one hand, Italy has stopped permanently aligning itself with Berlin and Paris. And on the other hand, that he did not firmly ally with the Visegrad countries, as many feared. A third option was made, with an emphasis on the Mediterranean dimension of the country and the creation, if possible, of a “southern axis”, which can project, as it seems, common claims with main reference to the need for European solidarity.

It remains to be seen how many meaningful results it will achieve. But the close contact with Greece is clear. Both with the exchange of visits of of Foreign Ministers Nikos Dendias and Antonio Tajani, as well as with Meloni’s reference to her upcoming meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, before the European Summit, scheduled for the 15th of the month. It is expected to take place either in Tirana, at the EU Summit with the countries of the Western Balkans, on December 6, or in Alicante, Spain, on the 9th of the month, on the sidelines of the meeting of the nine Mediterranean countries of the Union.
