The Economist predicts a Greek-Turkish escalation in the Aegean in 2023

How the Turkish media reacted to the reports of the British magazine and what Turkish analysts comment

The British Economist’s reports on the possibility of a Greek-Turkish escalation in the Aegean in 2023 caused discussions in Turkey.

“Erdogan will choose confrontation either in Syria or in the Aegean with Greece” wrote the magazine.

“Mr Erdogan may also try to reverse his downward spiral of bad luck through confrontation, either with Kurdish rebels in Syria, or with old enemy Greece over airspace and maritime rights. With Greek elections also around the corner, the risk of escalation is real,” says the Economist.

CNN TURK wonders about the Economist’s intentions. The network, as reported by the SKAI correspondent, Manolis Kostidis, reports: “Prediction for Greek-Turkish war in 2023 – What is the Economist’s goal? Is he predicting or setting up facts?’

CNN Turk’s anchor, Gyoksu Ongoren Ozgyur said: “We know that there is tension between the two countries, as well as between the leaders of Greece and Turkey. But here there is a suggestion that Turkey might intervene. When I read this term for intervention, various scenarios come to mind, like Imia or something else.”

Strategic analyst Abdullah Tsiftsi reported: “But our president has already stated that ‘one night we can come suddenly.’ What else to say? ‘We can come suddenly one night,’ we said that.”

The reporter asked: “So, you’re telling me what else to expect, aren’t you?”

“If a Greek-Turkish war occurs in the Aegean, the question is what impact it will have on Cyprus, as the Greek Cypriots are arming themselves in case it will have an impact on the Eastern Mediterranean and Syria. For this reason, I believe that we should not overlook his prediction” commented the analyst.

Disturbance for military exercises

Disturbed, Turkey flares up once again for Greece’s military exercises on the islands.

“Greece is violating the demilitarized regime,” reported the Haber Global television network.

“Greece is carrying out successive military exercises on the islands which must be demilitarized and there should be no weapons. The exercise in Rhodes was attended by the head of the Hellenic Armed Forces, Konstantinos Floros himself. Also, the armored fighting vehicles that the US provided for the first time were used in the exercises.

And in Lesbos, the “night lightning” exercise took place, the scenario of the exercise was to prevent a landing and deal with it. Greece violates the Treaties of Lausanne and Paris, which provide for the demilitarization of the islands,” the tourist network said.

Many Turkish media were upset about the exercises in Rhodes and Lesvos:

Milliyet writes: “Exercise in Rhodes with stubbornness. Greece carried out an exercise despite its objections to the militarization of the islands.”

Sozcu writes: “An advance with tanks on the demilitarized islands”, while Yeni Safak: “Greece provokes again. They carried out military exercises with tanks in Rhodes and Lesvos.

TRT HABER broadcast: “Military exercise by Greece in Rhodes which must be demilitarized”.
