The first Greek foreign minister to visit the country – Kazakhstan “is a very reliable energy partner for Greece and for the entire European Union”
“Revisionism will not be tolerated and should not be tolerated by the International Community in the 21st century,” underlined Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, after his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Mukhtar Tiluberdi.
“Respecting the territorial integrity, national sovereignty and independence of all states is the cornerstone of a stable and prosperous world”, pointed out the minister, who explained to his counterpart the fundamental principles of Greek foreign policy.
Mr. Dendias also referred to the Cyprus issue, another important international issue that needs a solution based on the resolutions of the UN Security Council and compatible with the European acquis.
Kazakhstan “is a very reliable energy partner for Greece and for the entire European Union” emphasized Mr. Dendias and specifically mentioned: “Greece, located at the crossroads of the Southern Natural Gas Corridor through the Trans-Adriatic Natural Gas Pipeline (TAP) , is a natural entry point for Europe, especially for Central and Eastern Europe”.
I repeated, and I repeat again, the 🇬🇷 position that revisionism will not be tolerated and should not be tolerated by the International Community in the 21st century (statement after the end of my meeting with 🇰🇿 Minister of Foreign Affairs/Ministry of Foreign Affairs, M .Tileuberdi). pic.twitter.com/GIJy7hnhCW

During the meeting, Mr. Dendias pointed out, the common interest in the interconnection of transport infrastructure in the region was discussed, while they talked about EU-Kazakhstan relations.
“Greece will be very happy to facilitate these relations. And we welcome the entry into force and implementation of the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA),” he stressed.
“Greece and Kazakhstan are not strangers”, he added and explained: “We have a long history of interaction and we have a solid bridge of friendship and mutual understanding, and this is the presence of 10,000 Greeks in Kazakhstan and more than 40,000 citizens of Kazakhstan – mainly Greek of origin in Greece”.
Mr Dendias, who is the first Greek foreign minister to visit the country, was earlier received by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
“I had the opportunity to discuss with him the great potential of our bilateral relations. In 2021 we had the first bilateral political and consular consultations, in Athens. We look forward to the next round in Kazakhstan”, he noted and recalled that in October, Deputy Foreign Minister Kostas Fragogiannis led the Greek delegation in Astana, for the 5th Greece-Kazakhstan Joint Interministerial Committee (MDE).
“This year we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Greek-Kazakh diplomatic relations and this shows how much we want to bring our relations closer,” he said.
After the meeting, the two ministers signed a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Diplomatic Academies on matters of mutual interest. This agreement is the 300th agreement signed by the current government.
He also thanked the government of Kazakhstan for publicly and positively responding to Greece’s request to open two honorary consulates, in Almaty and Aktau, two cities with a significant Greek presence.
The cooperation of the two countries within the framework of International Organizations was also discussed. “We have a very good partnership in the UN system and thank you very much for your support in our efforts to become a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2025-2026. We discussed diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine. We agreed that they should continue further, with full respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” said Mr. Dendias.
Finally, it was agreed that there is much scope for improving bilateral trade and economic relations in energy, agriculture, tourism, construction and trade in high value-added products, and the Greek Foreign Minister invited his counterpart to Athens.
