Athens Resists Ankara’s Incendiary Rhetoric, Showing the Way of International Law

By Penelope Galliou

Turkey is once again threatening war with the Mevlut Cavusoglu to connect directly and in the clearest way the sovereignty of the Aegean islands with their disarmament and for Tayyip Erdoğan to once again recall the “role” of the threatened Turkey, “fighting” his invisible enemies in the West.

Athens, for its part, insists on resisting the incendiary rhetoric of Ankara, emphatically and at every opportunity showing the path of International Law and firmly oriented to the defense of the sovereign rights of our country.

“We in no way have aggressive attitudes towards Turkey, but we are not going to accept its own aggressive attitudes towards our country either. We are determined to defend in every possible way our national integrity and, of course, our national rights.”

This was emphasized by Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis in joint statements with the British Deputy Foreign Minister Leo Docherty after the end of their talks, during which the excellent level of bilateral relations was confirmed.

Mr. Varvitsiotis pointed out that Greece unequivocally and at every opportunity condemns Turkish aggression, “expressed by a series of provocative and ahistorical statements”, as he said and added “Turkey’s revisionism offends the predetermined borders and International Law, which it is the only thing that should govern our relations.

Turkey should realize that the only way it can play reliably in the international community is by respecting the rules of International Law,” he commented.

The tone of the new escalation and unyielding struggle” was given by the Turkish Foreign Minister during a joint press conference with his Romanian counterpart, bringing back to the fore Turkey’s non-existent delusional claims against Greece regarding the demilitarization of Greek islands, citing Ankara’s letters to the UN and issuing new threats of war.

“In these letters we sent, there is a direct connection of the sovereignty of these islands with the demilitarized regime. So if Greece does not renounce this violation, then their sovereignty is called into question. Either Greece will back down on this issue and abide by the Treaties or we will do the right thing. Greece must not forget that he who sows winds, reaps storms. Since you don’t want peace, then we will do what we have to…suddenly, overnight” threatened the Turkish Foreign Minister.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, faithful to the tactics of distorting reality and history itself, chose in his new delirium to repeat the threats of Tayyip Erdogan, without calculating that the internationalization from the Greek side of Turkish provocation and non-existent claims keeps the international community informed .

A fact that was also reflected in the response of the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurscu, to the non-existent allegations of Cavusoglu, who called on Turkey to respect International Law by giving a paid response. “I believe that the problems between Greece and Turkey can be resolved through dialogue. As a lawyer, I believe this. International Law provides for peaceful dialogue and you can find solutions for these issues” commented Mr. Aurskou.

Government sources reminded of Greece’s firm position not to follow the rhetoric of escalation that Ankara seeks with the assessment of the Greek government to talk about Turkey’s hysterical reaction, which, however, does not capture the big picture.

After all, the prime minister himself from Tripoli reiterated for the umpteenth time the firm orientation of our country to the rules of International Law and the Law of the Sea and explained that Greece is open to dialogue on the basis of international law but not to dialogue with absurdity.

“He has me against him. He has a country that seeks dialogue, but as I have said many times we do not dialogue with the absurd. It has a country that applies its sovereign rights in practice and not in words, as evidenced by the hydrocarbon explorations that have already begun and are being carried out southwest of the Peloponnese,” observed Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Greece’s composure, however, as well as its consolidation in the international community as a pillar of stability and security in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, fuel Turkish irritation with Tayyip Erdogan continuing provocations and attacks against everything, once again targeting the West.

In particular, during his speech at the 28th congress of the confederation of Turkish employers’ organizations and at a time when his government is being crushed by the collapsing Turkish economy and its consequences that plague Turkish citizens, Tayyip Erdogan repeated the theory of Turkey under threat and spoke of a Turkey “whose southern border is surrounded by terrorist organizations, blocked from the EU for purely political reasons, exposed to the hidden technological embargo of the West, to wars in its East and North, and to man-made crises in the Mediterranean and the Aegean… Forget kneeling, on the contrary, Turkey has entered a new era of recovery. And this recovery will continue” he declared “fighting” his invisible enemies.
