“The Turkish F-16s flew around Lesbos before the exercise started and were intercepted,” Defense Ministry sources emphasize
Not only was Turkey’s NEXUS ACE training exercise not ‘NATO’, so was NATO’s AWACS refused to cooperate, defense ministry sources point out in response to Ankara’s false claims earlier.
In fact, the Turkish Ministry of Defense released a video of -armed- Turkish F-16s with which it states that they were flying in the “international” airspace of the Aegean during the “training exercise”!
In particular, the Pentagon noted that “this is not a NATO exercise, but a national exercise by Turkey”, and that “Turkish F-16s flew around Lesbos before the exercise began and were intercepted”.
In fact, according to Defense Ministry sources, the AWACS refused to cooperate while the Turkish F-16s were flying in the Athens FIR.
“After returning over mainland Turkey, only then came the NATO AWACS. The Turks are asking for AWACS assistance to act out a NEXUS ACE scenario, but that does not make the exercise ‘NATO’,” he stressed.
“We record this as yet another failed attempt to expose us to the allies” they commented.
