Tsipras: Citizens want a fair increase in income, not insufficient pre-election benefits

“If I were prime minister in a country where 85% would need a food pass to live, no, I wouldn’t have the face to celebrate, but neither would I be able to walk the streets,” said Alexis Tsipras

The President of the SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, has been touring the market of Korydallos since the morning. During his tour of the market, Mr. Tsipras discussed with citizens and shopkeepers about the extreme price increases and precision in energy, fuel and the supermarket, about the dramatic reduction of incomes and turnover that they bring, the swelling of the private debt and the large increases in loan installments under the risk of massive auctions of even the first home.

After his tour, Mr. Tsipras made the following statement to the press representatives:

“This year’s Christmas will unfortunately be one of the most difficult Christmases of the last decade for the great majority of Greek society.

Punctuality is wiping out incomes, households and businesses are in despair, but at the same time some big business groups are increasing their profits. And the Mitsotakis government gives them the possibility to have billions in surplus profits while for the great majority they receive tips. Inadequate campaign gratuities.

If I were prime minister in a country where 85% would need a food pass to live, no I wouldn’t have the face to celebrate, but I wouldn’t be out on the street either. But this is happening today. They celebrate the 20 euros a month in the supermarket for the 85%, not for the weak, that is, for the great majority of Greek society that is going through terrible difficulties.

But the Greek people do not need insufficient tips. What is needed is for justice to return. A fair increase in salary and income is needed. Fair redistribution of wealth and an end to profiteering.

Increase of the minimum wage in the private sector to 880 euros. An increase for civil servants at least 10%, as it is for ten years with fixed salaries.

Reduction of horizontal taxes, excise duty and VAT. And a fair regulation of the private debt with the cancellation of part of the nominal value and 120 installments.

The SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance program will not solve all problems. But it will breathe life into society, it will bring justice again.

I hope this Christmas will be the last that will find the Greek people mired in the mire of injustice, inequalities, exploitation and corruption. And the hope to be born again soon”.
