Diplomacy prevailed in de-escalation of tensions in northern Kosovo, said Josep Borel

Earlier, the Serbs began withdrawing roadblocks in Kosovo.

“Diplomacy prevailed in the de-escalation of tensions in northern Kosovo,” the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, said on Twitter, noting that “violence can never be a solution.”

“We welcome the responsible leadership of President Vucic and Prime Minister Kurti. Great teamwork by EU, US & NATO forces in Kosovo (NATO-KFOR). Thanks to everyone involved! We now need urgent progress in the dialogue,” added Mr Borrell.

The Serbs have begun to withdraw roadblocks in Kosovo, Serbian public television (RTS) reports. Traffic on the highway in southern Serbia leading to Kosovo has been restored and the central border crossing “Merdare” has been operating normally since early morning. In the early morning, at a roadblock inside the city north of Mitrovica, two trucks caught fire for an as yet unknown cause.

The decision to end the road blockade was made after a meeting between Kosovo Serb representatives and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. This meeting took place on Wednesday evening, in the town of Raska, near the administrative border of Serbia and Kosovo.

“The barricades will be removed, but mistrust remains. Those who think they can play with the lives of Serbs and their survival should know that, as we have not allowed it until now, united, we will not allow it in the future either,” Aleksandar Vucic said after the meeting.

A joint statement by the EU and the US on the situation in Kosovo was instrumental in the decision to end the road blockade. Vucic pointed out that this declaration provides strong guarantees for the safety and protection of the Serbian population in Kosovo.

The roadblocks in northern Kosovo were erected by the Serbs on December 10, following the arrest of Dejan Padic, a former police officer accused of terrorism. Yesterday, a Kosovo court decided to release Padić and place him under house arrest. This decision had a positive effect on the attitude of the Serbs, while it caused anger in Pristina.

“I am very curious to know which prosecutor made the recommendation and which judge approved it,” Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said yesterday, Wednesday.
