“We tell them that the islands from the Treaties of Lausanne and Paris were granted to you under the condition of their demilitarization. You don’t listen to what we say, and the islands are being militarized,” the Turkish minister said
One day after the provocative statements of the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, who even threatened war, the Minister of Defense of Turkey, Hulusi Akar, made new aggressive statements against Greece, saying that Ankara does not accept the expansion of territorial waters and warned that his country will not allow any expansion of any Aegean island.
“We do not say clearly that we do not accept at all the extension of territorial waters on the islands not only to 12 miles, but we do not accept beyond 6 miles. We have repeated this many times and make it clear. This is what we want them to understand,” said Hulusi Akar in response to a journalist’s question, as reported by SKAI correspondent Manolis Kostidis from Istanbul.
“In 1995, the appropriate work was done in the National Assembly and everyone knows that. Everyone should know that any such step will cause big problems. Remember, we are telling our neighbor that the wrong bill will be returned from Ankara,” added the Turkish minister.
Regarding the islands of disputed sovereignty in Athgeo he said: “In the Aegean there are about 3000 islands that belong to Greece. Of course, not everything belongs to Greece. There are islands of disputed sovereignty. The islands that belong to them, and are under our noses, are visited by their ministers, officials, generals, admirals. They do take offs, landings. Aren’t these all challenges? We tell them that the islands from the Treaties of Lausanne and Paris were granted to you under the condition of their demilitarization. You don’t listen to what we say, and the islands are being militarized, the installation of military units on them are developments that are happening under our noses. How can Turkey not perceive this as a risk, danger and threat? Since you do this, we say that this is a threat to us, it is a risk. Then we will be forced to take action.” concluded the Turkish Defense Minister.
