Concern in the Turkish media: The balance in the Aegean is changing in favor of Greece

Turks continue to analyze Greece’s weapons programs and demand demilitarization of the islands

The media continue to worry in Turkey and analyze our country’s armament programs, while the aggressive rhetoric from the Minister of Defense, Hulusi Akar, continues.

As SKAI correspondent Manolis Kostidis reports from IstanbulHurriyet political analyst Sedan Ergin in his article states that the balance in the Aegean is changing in favor of Greece, while adding that the Greek Rafale and F-16 Vipers are causing concern in Turkey:

“The importance of this F-16 issue stems from the fact that it directly concerns the Turkish-Greece balance of power in the Aegean. Because, apart from the Rafale warplanes, which Greece started buying from France, it has already started the modernization of the F-16 planes before Turkey.

There is concern in Ankara that if Turkey fails to start a similar program and when the new aircraft that Greece will buy are taken into account, the balance of military forces in the Aegean in the mid-2020s will shift in favor of Greece.

“Greece entered an arms race with Turkey”

In fact, in some television shows, Turkish analysts talk about equipment that Greece is allegedly preparing to buy in the future:

“Greece, which has entered an arms race with Turkey, wants to strengthen the Armed Forces in the new year. Their first goal is the supply of missile systems from Israel.

On the agenda of Athens is the purchase of Israeli SPiKE NLOS missile systems. Athens wants to complete the deal in the first month of 2024.

Athens buys Belharra frigates as well as Rafale fighters from France. Their cost reaches 6 billion dollars. As per the agreement with the USA, it aims to modernize 83 F-16s to Viper level. While the Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis is trying to block the sale of F-16 to Turkey”.

“Greece should withdraw from the islands that are there illegally – Not even at the 6.1 mile extension”

In another case, Milliyet newspaper’s political analyst Ozai Sendir analyzes that Turkey wants Greece to withdraw its military forces from the islands, but also to withdraw completely from islands where it is there… illegally, while clarifying that Ankara does not will accept an extension of the territorial waters of Greece not even to 6.1 miles!

“To give you the prevailing climate as I have spoken with many state officials. Turkey will not accept the extension even to 6.1 miles. The officials also say that Greece is an expansionist country, so it should withdraw its weapons from the islands it has demilitarized and will withdraw from the islands it is in illegally. It’s so clear.” I too have not heard these positions as clearly as I have heard them in the last 2 months from the officials.”
