Sakellaropoulou’s meeting with Steinmeier in Berlin – Issues of defense, energy and environmental protection on the table

The President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou met today with her German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in the context of the official visit he is making to Berlin at his invitation. During the meeting, the excellent level of bilateral relations was confirmed and ways of strengthening them were examined, in all areas of mutual interestwith an emphasis on defense, energy efficiency, green energy, environmental protection and smart technologies, such as the Smart & Sustainable Astypalea project.

The President of the Republic repeated the clear condemnation of the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine and pointed out Greece’s adherence to the fundamental principles of International Law and the United Nations Charter, as well as the importance of preserving the unity of the European Union.

Mrs. Sakellaropoulou stated that Greece particularly appreciates Germany’s attitude towards the Turkish threats and reminded that our country is firmly in favor of dialogue, which, however, cannot be conducted in conditions of tension, revisionism and incendiary rhetoric.

Referring to the Western Balkans, the President said that revitalizing and speeding up the accession process is vital for Europe’s security, stability and prosperity.

He also emphasized Greece’s contribution to energy autonomy of Europewith its capacity as a hub for natural gas and oil pipelines, existing and under-construction energy infrastructure, and the critical importance of our merchant fleet, the world’s largest, in the transportation of energy.

The President of the Republic made it clear that for Greece the prevention and effective management of migration and refugee flows, the avoidance of the instrumentalization of the problem and the protection of the borders of the EU, with respect for human rights.

Finally, it is noted that Mrs. Sakellaropoulou underlined to her German counterpart the utmost importance of the issue of war reparations and the occupation loan, stressing that the relevant dialogue will be to the benefit of both countries and the resolution of past disputes will help to strengthen bilateral cooperation for the future.
