Thanos Pleuris at “Agios Savva” for World Cancer Day

The General Cancer – Oncology Hospital of Athens “Agios Savvas”, the Minister of Health visited today, February 4, 2023, World Cancer Day Thanos Pleurisaccompanied by the General Secretary of Public Health Irini Agapidakis.

The minister and the general secretary met with the administration, the doctors, but also representatives of the Nursing, Medical and Administrative service and the Clinics. The doctors and nursing staff thanked the Minister of Health for his visit.

“From the very beginning, the government invested in prevention and we continue the actions for prevention, treatment and care of citizens. Already more than 5,200 women have been identified in time with findings and immediately start their treatments. Prevention saves. Our country now has organized Screening Programs and for the first time the State is reaching out to the citizens to do the basic tests so that if there is something, it can be identified”, emphasized Mr. Pleuris.

Actions of the Ministry of Health implemented and projects launched against cancer:

– Fofi Births Program for breast cancer. About 85,000 mammograms have already been performed and about 5,200 women have been identified early with findings.

– Colon screening program

– Uterine cancer screening program

– Reduction of smoking through anti-smoking laws and actions to stop smoking.

– HPV vaccination for boys as well

– Innovative treatments with enhanced clinical trials on drugs

– Reinforcement of primary health care through the personal doctor who will monitor the citizen’s health for early diagnosis

– Organized framework for home care for oncology patients

– Palliative Care for the first time in our country

Infrastructure to support the plan against cancer in the Hospitals of the Country

  1. Construction of a New Oncology Hospital in Thessaloniki and relocation of the Theageni Cancer Hospital.
  2. Construction of a new building for the expansion of the Oncology Clinic and the inclusion of the New Radiotherapy Center including the Nuclear Medicine department at the Lamia General Hospital.
  3. Establishment of a Radiation Therapy Center at the General Hospital for Thoracic Diseases of Athens “H Sotiria”
  4. Addition of a new wing of the Short Hospitalization Unit of the Pathological Oncology Clinic of A.P.Th. at G.N.Th. “PAPAGEORGIOU”
  5. Construction of the Cell and Gene Therapy building at the “G. Papanicolaou”
  6. Creation of an oncology clinic in the 3rd building of the clinics of the University General Hospital of Heraklion, Crete
  7. “Nikos Kourkoulos” Day Hospital Unit operates in Thessaloniki Donation of the Ioannis S. Latsis Foundation.
