Prime Minister Antonio Costa expressed the hope that Leopard 2 tanks will be delivered to Ukraine by the end of March
Type tanks Leopard 2 will send to Ukraine Portugal, as the Prime Minister of the country stated today Antonio Costawithout specifying how many will be sent.
Costa added that Portugal is holding talks with Germany to receive spare parts, which it needs to repair a number of Leopard tanks it has.
“Right now we are working to be able to send some of our tanks,” Costa told Portuguese news agency Lusa during a trip to the Central African Republic. “I know how many tanks will be sent (to Ukraine), but that will be announced at the right time.”
Costa’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The head of the Portuguese armed forces Admiral Antonio Silva Ribeiro said last month that Portugal has 37 Leopard 2 tanks, but Portuguese media have reported that most are not operational.
Portugal is working with Germany to get the spare parts needed to repair the malfunctioning tanks, Costa said, adding that he hopes they will be delivered to Ukraine by the end of March.
