Voted today in Parliament, the draft law of the Ministry of Justice for its beginning Equal Treatment for People with Disabilities. The specific bill, introduced by the Member of Parliament Mr. Konstantinos Kyranakis, and presented by the Deputy Minister of Justice Giorgos Kotsiras provides, among other things:
– The full legal enshrinement of the Principle of Equal Treatment thus enabling all citizens with disabilities to now have legal claims against the Greek State in case they become victims of discrimination.
–Free legal aid for all citizens with disabilitiesregardless of income criteria
-The definition in every Court and Prosecutor’s Office of the country, Accessibility managerwhich will ensure the respect of their rights.
– Her elimination of pejorative and anachronistic terms by all the legislative Codes of the country.
SYRIZA nevertheless did not agree to vote on the favorable provisions for people with disabilities despite the positive comments of the Associations and representatives of the disability movement in all meetings.
“I would really feel ashamed and would not be able to look at my fellow human beings with disabilities in the eyes, if I did not vote for free legal aid so that they can have decent representation in the Greek courts” commented Mr. Kyranakis about the attitude of SYRIZA in the Plenary.
