THE president of PASOK-KINAL, Nikos Androulakisargued the need the EU to play a more active role in the new search attempt solution of the Cyprus problem, agreeing with the position of the newly elected President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, whom he met earlier in the morning and congratulated him on his election.
“In this new period, the European Union must play a strategic role institutionally in the negotiations, because it is unthinkable to have an occupation army in an EU member state and itself not participate institutionally in the negotiations, which will bring prosperity, stability and a truly sustainable solution in Cyprus” stated Mr. Androulakis.
At the same time, he expressed the hope that with the election of Mr. Christodoulidis, he should to start a new effort to resolve the Cyprus issue issue with respect to international law and UN resolutions.
“We owe it to you to be on your side. Therefore, in this new context, I think you are doing the right thing, this will be an innovation that will help to have negotiations in a context of respect for international law and not pressures that can lead to wrong results and the issue of the solution but also the people themselves”noted the president of PASOK-KINAL.
From his side, the President of the Republic of Cyprus he mentioned that “The EU has those motivations that can lead Turkey to think about the benefits for it through a solution of the Cyprus problem. They have problems too, you see what happened with the earthquakes”. He also added that “we want to take advantage of the time until the elections in Turkey to talk to the Europeans, to make them sharers of our own new approach, to see their own readiness and within this context we also want your help in a European level, so that immediately after the elections in Turkey, the EU will assume this role always within the framework of the decisions of the United Nations”.
