“I won’t get into whether the previous ones should have prepared it, I don’t care. I know that we did not fully implement this system,” he said
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed the certainty that we will learn the whole truth about the tragic accident in Tempe without any cover-up, in his interview on the show Kalimera with Giorgos Autias.
The prime minister emphasized: “This is my personal commitment, but we will not learn the truth only through administrative findings. We will learn the truth from the Justice. And I have complete confidence and see the speed and responsibility with which the Justice moves in this case. And I think that quickly – I estimate from what I read because obviously we cannot interfere in the work of the Justice – we will have developments”.
Mr. Mitsotakis said that the day of the accident was “the most difficult day of my tenure and one of the most difficult days of my life. It was tragic what all of us who were at the scene of the tragic accident faced. It was a punch in the stomach for me, for the entire Greek society. I felt an obligation not just to apologize, but to take responsibility for the fact that a remote control system that should have been ready in our day, was not.”
And he continued: “I will not deal with whether the previous ones should have prepared it, I do not care. I know that we did not fully implement this system. Although there was local remote control in Larissa, we did not fully implement it.
I can’t go back in time, what I can do is to ensure that this contract is completed, that the trains are back in full safety, they are already starting and running. That we will step by step regain the trust of the passenger public in the Greek railways and that of course what happened will be an occasion to clash even more boldly with all those foci of anachronism and “nepotism” that still exist in the State”.
The prime minister concluded by saying: “So I say it again today for all to hear: assessment everywhere. Rating everywhere. Not punitive, not to make someone leave, but to reward the good and help and support those who are not good to become better.”
