Announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs it is stated:
“Following the ongoing communications and coordination of actions, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, with his counterparts, and his relevant instructions to the Crisis Management Unit and other Services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for the safe release of Greek citizens from Sudan, an additional 10 people were freedthis time with the help of Italy.
Those in question are already in Djibouti. The group of 10 consists of Greeks and members of their families. Everyone is in good health.
We note that in the early hours of the morning today, the French plane carrying the two injured Greeks landed in Djibouti, as announced in yesterday’s announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was informed about these developments.
The Ambassador of Greece to Ethiopia and the Honorary Consul of our country in Djibouti are in Djibouti to welcome the specific Greek citizens and provide any assistance.
During today’s Foreign Affairs Council, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, will express his thanks to his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, for Italy’s substantial assistance in the release of the aforementioned Greeks from Sudan.
The process and coordination with EU partners and allies for the release of the remaining Greeks and their family members is ongoing.”
The second group to escape
This is the second group of Greek citizens who manage to escape from Sudan, where the civil war is raging.
The first group of eight, including both injured, left yesterday on a flight carrying French citizens and landed in Djibouti.
The eight people were welcomed by the Greek Ambassador to Ethiopia.
Besides, since yesterday afternoon two Greek Air Force aircraft together with officers of the special forces are in Egypt, in order to be able to participate in an operation to free the Greek citizens.
The planes landed in Egypt as operations to evacuate foreign nationals are underway in Sudan.
