Mr. Mitsotakis spoke with the workers of the shipyards, while in the machine shop he watched the work carried out on specific components by specialized technicians.
The “Atlas” shipyard in Perama, one of the 24 shipyards active in the region, was visited this morning by Prime Minister and president of the New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“For four years now, our government has effectively supported the country’s shipbuilding and repair industry, with interventions that not only saved the emblematic shipyards of Elefsina, cleaned up the shipyards of Skaramangas, but also supported the 24 shipyards here in Peramas, which, like you see, today they respond even more to the demands of their customers.
Greece is a country identified with seafaring, the shipyards of Perama have gained a worldwide reputation for the quality of their work. A total of ten thousand people work in the shipbuilding and repair zone of Perama.
And the big challenge for the next day is how we can further develop this industry, give more and better paying jobs, how we convince more young people to follow this path of technical specialization. How will we cooperate with the technical schools so that you too can have the craftsmen of the next day, so that Perama, which for 100 years has been identified with its shipyards, can continue to develop here in the 2nd district of Piraeus that we have from the highest rates of growth and de-escalation of unemployment and to a certain extent this is also due to all the work offered by the shipbuilding and repair zone”, stressed the Prime Minister addressing the workers.
“It is an honor for us that a Prime Minister is coming to the Perama shipyards for the first time. Thank you for what you have done so far and we hope that in the future with the good after the new elections, you will help the shipyards to take an even step forward – let us all go forward and we and the workers of the shipyards”, said the president of the Association of Perama Shipyard Owners and owner of the “Atlas” shipyard Theologos Katsoulakiswho took him on a tour of the facilities, representing the entire Perama Shipyards.
“Every time we visit the shipyards we see more boats on land, more new and innovative activities and of course let’s not forget that here the shipyards also serve the needs of our Navy and Coast Guard.
You see here a Coast Guard vessel which has returned from its missions in Mytilini and which will do its annual service here, so there is also this strategic dimension, because if it is possible for a country like Greece to not have shipyards which they can serve the needs of our Armed Forces, the Navy and the Coast Guard.
Well, we are here open for the next day to see how we can further support all your actions so that you can continue to excel, grow and create more good paying jobs. Congratulations again for all the work that is being done here in Perama”, answered Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after seeing up close the repairs on the P355 type ship of the Coast Guard “Georgios Kotoulas”.
It is recalled that the Prime Minister had given the name to the ship “Georgios Kotoulas” in April 2021, at the naming ceremony of the two patrol vessels that joined the Coast Guard.
Mr. Mitsotakis spoke with the workers of the shipyards, while in the machine shop he watched the work carried out on specific components by specialized technicians.
The Perama shipyards have completed 100 years of continuous activity and provide shipbuilding, repair, design and maintenance services for all sizes and types of small and medium shipping ships at their facilities.
During the last four years, the following were carried out at the Shipyards:
- 70 constructions of new ships and boats with a total tonnage of over 120,000 kroner.
- Lifting – maintenance – repairs on more than 8,500 ships.
In the 24 shipyards of Perama, 520 special companies are active, while work is also provided to 280 special companies supporting their activities.
The annual average number of workers employed in our shipyards exceeds 17,000 workers, while 80% of the turnover is foreign currency inflow from foreign ship-owning companies.
