Alexis Tsipras arrived first at the Presidential Palace, Kyriakos Velopoulos second, Nikos Androulakis third, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis fourth and Dimitris Koutsoubas fifth.
The country is heading for new elections on June 25. The procedures were accelerated, as all the leaders returned the mandate before the three-day period stipulated by the Constitution was completed, after realizing that there is no room for convergence and therefore no possibility of forming a government.
Based on the Constitution, the President of the Republic proceeds to the last constitutional step and convenes the Council of Political Leaders today to discuss with all the leaders of the parliamentary parties the possibility of forming a government.
However, given the political positions and associations, this last effort is discounted as fruitless.
Mrs. Sakellaropoulou will proceed to the next step provided for by the Constitution and is the formation of a caretaker government which will lead the country to the next elections on June 25.
According to information, as the name of the President of the Court of Auditors, Mr. Ioannis Sharma, prevails for the position of acting prime minister as the most senior among the supreme judges.
In his turn, Mr. Sharmas will appoint the interim government which is expected to be composed of persons who will enjoy the widest possible acceptance.
The next step in the post-election procedures, if the relevant Presidential Decree that defined the convening of the new Parliament for the elections of May 21 on June 1 is amended, is the opening of the Parliament a few days earlier, specifically on Sunday, May 28.
During the meeting in question, the swearing-in of the deputies will take place, while the following day, on May 29, the Parliament will be called to elect its presidency and since a government cannot be formed, the new Presidential Decree will be issued by the evening of the same day Decree that will dissolve Parliament again and call for new elections to be held on June 25
