The President of SYRIZA-PS, Alexis Tsipras, met with the former President of the USA, Barack Obama, today Thursday. The two men discussed international developments, the challenges facing progressive forces after the economic and refugee crisis and the rise of the extreme right, as well as the conservatism of public opinion, reports SYRIZA.

Alexis Tsipras thanked President Obama for his support give Greece in difficult times.

At the same time, they discussed the timeliness of the messages he had sent during his previous visit to Athens when he had spoken:

  • on inequalities “which are one of the biggest challenges for our economies and democracies”
  • about “wealthy companies that operate by different rules while avoiding taxes”
  • about “the generosity of the Greeks to the refugees that had inspired the world” and the need for a European solution to the refugee issue.
  • on the importance of “peaceful dispute resolution and diplomacy” in relation to Iran, Climate Change and North Macedonia
  • on the importance of “freedom of the press to expose injustice and corruption and hold leaders accountable”, “independent judiciaries to uphold the rule of law and human rights” and “separation of powers to limited the reach of any department of government.”

Alexis Tsipras and Barack Obama also spoke about their shared values.
