Watch the Prime Minister’s speech in Parliament at the pre-day agenda debate at the level of political leaders
The political confrontation over the devastating fires raging in the country is transferred to the Parliament, in the pre-day debate at the level of political leaders that begins with the Prime Minister’s speech Kyriakou Mitsotakis.
The debate is held at the initiative of the government.
In his speech, Mr. Mitsotakis said:
– I come to the discussion with the fire in Evros still active with the first goal of seeking explanations and converging on solutions. To describe the initiatives we have undertaken, to see the weaknesses, but above all we are waiting for proposals for the next day. The climate crisis is here, even more threatening to us all. The answer must be given by everyone. Citizens do not expect parliamentary cockfighting, but maturity, seriousness. The fires have no party color.
-I want to express my support to all those who have been tested and are still being tested by the fiery blaze and to assure that the state will complete all compensation procedures and the restoration of the areas.
– We are all hurt, we should also agree on one admission. Climate threats are often one step ahead of human defense. This cannot mean that our mobilization should not be adapted to the new data. We must do more every year. In the USA, an entire city in Hawaii burned down without the authorities having time to evacuate it, without even knowing how many people died. The whole of the European south was tested, in Tenerife a fire burned half the island.
-Although we prepared better than any other year, we were faced with unprecedented events. This summer was the hottest, we had one of the most intense and lasting heat waves, we had the hot, dry, windy phenomenon.
